## Short Answer

Often, yes, but how depends on what the car already has. Apple CarPlay and Android Auto show selected phone apps, such as maps, calls, messages and audio, on the car's screen, while the car's own system stays in charge. A car without them has three possible routes: switching on a function the car already supports, a manufacturer upgrade or retrofit, or an aftermarket unit, and each has trade-offs. Whichever you choose, set the route and music before you drive and keep phone use within the law.

---

## What do Apple CarPlay and Android Auto actually do?

They put selected apps from your phone on the car's own screen, in a simplified layout designed for use while driving. Apple CarPlay works with an iPhone and Android Auto with an Android phone, and you control them through the car's touchscreen, knobs or buttons, or by voice through Siri or Google's assistant. The apps are installed on the phone, not in the car. The everyday uses are navigation, including third-party map apps, phone calls, messages read aloud and answered by voice, and music and other audio. Android Auto is not the same as Android Automotive OS, a system some cars have built in, with apps installed in the car itself.

---

## What don't they do?

They don't take over the car. The car's own system still runs its screen and its own functions, and standard CarPlay works alongside it, for example sharing the speakers with the car's built-in radio. Apple presents control of functions such as the radio and climate, and content for the instrument cluster, as features of its newer CarPlay Ultra, which needs a recent model with the brand's next-generation infotainment system. Both systems also limit what can be used on the move: CarPlay video apps play only when the car is parked, and Android Auto games can be played only while parked. In-car design principles say video and other distracting content should be hidden from the driver while the car is moving, so Otto does not recommend unlocking it.

## What is the difference between wired and wireless?

Wired means connecting the phone to the car's USB port with a cable; wireless connects without one. Not every car offers both. A car may support CarPlay by cable only, by cable and wirelessly, or wirelessly only, and most cars connect to Android Auto by cable. Wireless Android Auto needs a car or stereo that supports it and a compatible phone with 5 GHz Wi-Fi, and the first wireless connection pairs the phone and car by Bluetooth. CarPlay also needs Siri switched on. Check the owner's manual to see which version your car has, and check the current requirements for your phone, because they change with new software.

---

## How can you tell whether your car supports them?

Start with the owner's manual and, for Android Auto, Google's list of compatible cars. Apple says CarPlay is offered on more than 800 models and is standard or optional on many cars from 2016 onwards; Google says Android Auto works with more than 500. If you are unsure, Apple's advice is to ask the vehicle manufacturer, and to keep the car's system on the latest firmware from the manufacturer. In Oman there is one more thing to check. Apple and Google each publish a list of countries where their system is officially available, and Oman was on neither list when we checked in October 2026. Google says most Android Auto features won't work outside its listed countries. That doesn't mean a system can't connect here, but it does mean you should test it with your own phone in the car, and ask the manufacturer's agent, before paying for any of the routes below.

---

## Can the function be switched on in a car that already has the hardware?

Sometimes. Some cars leave the factory with hardware and software for functions that are not switched on, and the manufacturer may offer to activate them later. BMW in the United Kingdom, for example, sells Apple CarPlay activation through its online ConnectedDrive Store, delivered over the air, for BMWs built from July 2016 that have particular factory navigation and telephony options. This is the least invasive route, because nothing is removed and the car keeps its original system. Eligibility depends on the brand, model, equipment and market, so ask the manufacturer's agent with the car's details. Aftermarket coding tools can switch on some options too, but incorrect coding can leave a control unit needing to be reprogrammed; [activating hidden car features](https://autotronix.om/otto/activating-hidden-car-features) explains the risks. AutoTronix Lab can activate or retrofit Apple CarPlay and Android Auto on the brands it specialises in, once the specific car has been checked by its VIN, because not every model or specification supports the same route.

---

## What does a manufacturer upgrade or retrofit involve?

When a car's system can't run CarPlay or Android Auto as built, some manufacturers have offered an upgrade through their dealers. Toyota in the United Kingdom, for example, offered owners of certain 2019 model-year Corolla and 2019–2020 RAV4 models an upgrade of their Touch 2 multimedia system to add Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, carried out by appointment at a Toyota centre. A factory retrofit can involve new hardware, a change to the car's recorded specification and new software, so it is work for technicians with the manufacturer's information. Its strength is that the result is designed for your model; its limit is that it exists only for some models and markets. The wider choice is covered in [OEM retrofits and aftermarket upgrades](https://autotronix.om/otto/oem-retrofit-vs-aftermarket-upgrades).

---

## What should you weigh up before fitting an aftermarket unit?

An aftermarket head unit replaces or adds to the car's screen. Units from companies such as Alpine, Pioneer and Sony can add CarPlay to older cars, and Android Auto works with compatible aftermarket stereos, so this is often the only route for a car whose maker offers no upgrade. The trade-offs come from the car's electronics. Mercedes-Benz warns that modifying electronic components, their software or their wiring can affect other networked components and safety-relevant systems, and Kia warns that unauthorised electronic devices can make the car operate abnormally and cause wiring damage, battery discharge and even fire. Kia also says damage or problems caused by a modification may not be covered by the warranty. Before choosing a unit, ask the fitter which of the car's existing functions will keep working, such as the steering-wheel buttons, cameras and vehicle settings, and ask the authorised agent about the warranty if the car is still covered.

---

## How do you use CarPlay or Android Auto without being distracted?

Treat the screen as a tool you set up before moving. Google tells drivers to set up Android Auto with the car in park and before starting the drive, to pay attention to the road and to always obey applicable laws, and Apple's design guidance says any setup on the iPhone should be done before the vehicle moves. Enter the destination and choose the music before you set off, use voice control rather than the touchscreen, and leave reading or typing messages until you have stopped. In Oman, the Royal Oman Police treats using a phone or other electronic device while driving as an offence that can bring a fine or prison. Its Director General of Traffic has called phone use at the wheel one of the main causes of accidents and urged drivers to stop using their phones while driving, and the police use cameras that can detect mobile phone use. We found no official Omani text on how this applies to a car's built-in screen, so use it with the same restraint.

## Common Questions

**Are CarPlay and Android Auto officially supported in Oman?**
Oman was not on Apple's or Google's official country lists when we checked in October 2026, and Google says most Android Auto features won't work outside its listed countries. Test the system with your own phone in the car, and ask the manufacturer's agent, before paying for activation or a new unit.

**Can I watch videos on the car's screen through CarPlay or Android Auto?**
Only when parked, and only where it is supported: CarPlay video apps play only when the car is parked, and Android Auto limits games to parked use. Otto does not recommend unlocking video while driving.

**Does a wireless connection work with any phone?**
No. Wireless needs a car or stereo that supports it, and for Android Auto a compatible phone with 5 GHz Wi-Fi; CarPlay also needs Siri switched on. Check the current requirements for your phone, because they change with new software.

**Will an aftermarket screen affect my warranty?**
It can. Kia, for example, says damage or problems caused by a modification may not be covered. If the car is still under warranty, ask the authorised agent before anything is fitted.
