## Short Answer

Audi names its models with letters and a number: A for low-floor cars, Q for high-floor models such as the SUVs, and a number, currently from one to eight, for size and position in the range. S and RS mark the sportiest versions, quattro means all-wheel drive, and since 2025 codes such as e-tron, TFSI and TDI tell electric and combustion models with the same name apart. Internal codes such as C9 or B5 identify the generations.

---

## Which models make up the Audi range?

In October 2026 Audi’s own media site lists the A3, A5, A6, A8, Q3, Q5, Q7, Q8 and Q9, together with the electric A2 e-tron, A6 e-tron, Q4 e-tron, Q6 e-tron and e-tron GT. These are current facts, ranges change, and Audi states that features and equipment can vary depending on the country where a car is sold.

---

## What do the letters A and Q mean?

A marks Audi’s low-floor cars and Q its high-floor models. The Q7 has been in the range since 2005, and Audi says it and the Q models that followed took the company into the booming market for sports utility vehicles. Electric models follow the same rule, which is why there is an A6 e-tron and a Q6 e-tron.

---

## What does the number in an Audi name mean?

Where the model sits by size and positioning. Since February 2025 Audi uses the numbers, currently one to eight, for that purpose whatever the powertrain. The system goes back to 1994, when the A8 replaced the Audi V8 and began a fundamental revision of Audi’s model names: the successor to the Audi 100 became the A6, and the Audi 80 became the A4.

---

## Why did the A4 become the A5?

For a while Audi separated electric and combustion models by even and odd numbers, and in 2024 the successor to the A4 was launched as the A5, built in Neckarsulm as the first model on Audi’s new Premium Platform Combustion (PPC). In February 2025 Audi dropped that split: electric and combustion cars may now share a name, and the body style and the powertrain code tell them apart. The first model named under the new rule was the combustion-engined A6, revealed on 4 March 2025, which sits beside the all-electric A6 e-tron, for example as the A6 Avant TFSI and the A6 Avant e-tron. Audi did not rename models that were already on sale.

---

## What do S, RS and quattro mean?

S and RS mark the sportiest versions of a model line: Audi describes the S and RS versions of the A4 and A6 as their top-of-the-range sports models. In 1990 the S2, then Audi’s sportiest production model, was the first to wear the red rhombus emblem, and the Avant RS 2 of 1994, developed with Porsche, was the first RS model. Every RS has permanent all-wheel drive as a basic feature. quattro, Italian for four, is Audi’s name for all-wheel drive; Audi registered it as a brand in 1979.

## What are Audi Sport and the performance models?

Audi Sport GmbH is Audi’s high-performance subsidiary and part of the Audi Group, not a separate car brand. It began as quattro GmbH on 10 October 1983, took its current name in 2016, and designs and develops the R and RS models. A performance badge, first used in the A6 C7 range, mainly means more power: the RS 6 Avant performance and RS 7 Sportback performance have 463 kW (630 hp), 22 kW (30 hp) more than the base versions. The RS e-tron GT was the first fully electric RS, and the new RS 5 of 2026 is the first RS with a hybrid drive.

---

## What do e-tron, TFSI and TDI mean?

They are powertrain codes, and since 2025, together with the body style (Avant, Sedan or Sportback), they tell apart models that share a name. e-tron marks Audi’s fully electric models; the first, the e-tron of 2018, was renamed Q8 e-tron in December 2022, a name that put it at the top of the range. TFSI stands for turbocharging and direct petrol injection, and TDI for turbo diesel with direct injection. Some names also carry a number before the code, such as the Q8 50 e-tron with 250 kW and the Q8 55 e-tron with 300 kW.

---

## What are codes such as C9, B5 or 8N?

Internal generation codes. Audi’s C series was the Audi 100 from 1968 and the A6 from 1994, nine generations from C1 to the C9 A6 that went on sale in Europe in 2025. Other examples are B1 for the first Audi 80 of 1972, B4 for the Avant RS 2, B5 for the RS 4 Avant of 1999, D2 for the first A8 and 8N for the first TT. These codes help when checking parts or the history of a specific car.

---

## Which Audi names are no longer built?

The TT, made in three generations from 1998, ended after 25 years and 662,762 cars; the last one was a TTS. The R8 super sports car ended in March 2024 after 45,949 cars. The original e-tron name was dropped in 2022, when the car became the Q8 e-tron, and with the 2024 generation the A4 name gave way to the A5. Earlier, in 1994, the Audi 100 and Audi 80 names had given way to the A6 and A4.

## Are Audi models the same in Oman and the Gulf?

Not necessarily, and Audi says so itself. Audi Oman’s official website, published by Audi Volkswagen Middle East, states that features and equipment can vary depending on the country where a car is sold, and that binding, up-to-date specifications come only from the authorised dealer or importer. On 23 October 2026 the site listed 34 models in 12 model lines for Oman, from the A3 to the Q9 and the e-tron GT. Some choices differ from Europe: in Europe the new A6 went on sale first as an Avant, while the Oman site lists the A6 as a petrol Sedan and the A6 e-tron as a Sportback. So check the specification of the exact car with the authorised Audi dealer in Oman, and for a used or imported car a [pre-purchase inspection](https://autotronix.om/otto/pre-purchase-inspection) confirms what you are buying.

## Common Questions

**Does a higher number mean a bigger Audi?**
Audi says the number, currently from one to eight, shows a model’s size and positioning in the range, whatever its powertrain.

**Is the Audi A5 the new A4?**
Yes. In 2024 the successor to the A4 was launched as the A5, as a Sedan and an Avant.

**Is Audi Sport a separate brand?**
No. Audi Sport GmbH is part of the Audi Group, and RS models are Audi models.

**Is every Audi with e-tron in its name fully electric?**
Audi uses e-tron as the code for its fully electric models, from the original e-tron of 2018 to today’s A6 e-tron and Q6 e-tron.
