## Short Answer

A BMW name is a code. The first digit gives the series, and higher numbers generally mean larger cars. The next two digits once showed engine size, so 30 meant 3 litres; on today's cars they indicate power instead. Letters add the powertrain (i for petrol, d for diesel, e for plug-in hybrid), xDrive marks all-wheel drive, and X, Z, i and M identify BMW's SAVs, roadsters, electric cars and high-performance models.

---

## How does the BMW naming system work?

The system dates from the first 5 Series of 1972, and BMW names the 520i as the first model to follow it. In a three-digit name, the first digit identifies the series, and higher numbers generally mean larger cars: a 3 Series is smaller than a 5 Series, which is smaller than a 7 Series. An even first digit, as in the 2, 4, 6 and 8 Series, generally signals a sportier body style such as a coupé.

---

## What do the last two digits mean?

Originally they showed engine displacement: 30 meant 3 litres. On today's cars BMW uses the two digits to indicate engine power instead, a figure it calls a 'virtual displacement'. That is why a modern badge doesn't necessarily tell you the size of the engine under the bonnet.

---

## What do the letters after the number mean?

The letter shows the powertrain: i for petrol (it originally stood for fuel injection), d for diesel and e for a plug-in hybrid. xDrive means all-wheel drive, and sDrive means drive on one axle, a label BMW uses only on X and Z models. The newest names are changing again: the updated 7 Series of 2026 lists a BMW 740 xDrive, with no letter after the number, alongside the BMW 740d xDrive.

## What are BMW's X, Z and i ranges?

X models are what BMW calls Sports Activity Vehicles (SAV); the X5 was revealed in 1999, and the iX3 of 2020 was the first fully electric X model. Z models are roadsters. The i sub-brand covers fully electric cars, beginning with the i3 of 2013, and BMW's electric flagship, the iX, carries no series number.

---

## What is the difference between M Sport, M Performance and a full M car?

They are three different things. M is BMW's high-performance sub-brand, developed by BMW M GmbH, which grew out of BMW Motorsport GmbH, founded in 1972; on X models a full M car carries the M after the model name, as in the X3 M. M Performance models sit between the regular range and full M cars and carry the M inside the name, such as the M340i, or after it on X and Z models, such as the X6 M50i. The M Sport package is an equipment package, not a model: in the updated 7 Series, for example, BMW offers the M Sport package and M Sport package Pro, with specific chassis upgrades, alongside a separate trio of M Performance models. What an M Sport package includes depends on the model, so check the specification of the car itself.

## How have the 7 Series badges changed over the generations?

The first 7 Series (E23), built from May 1977 to June 1986, launched with 2.8-, 3.0- and 3.2-litre engines; in 1979 the 728i replaced the 728 and 730, the 732i succeeded the 733i, and the 745i of 1980 used a 252 hp turbocharged six-cylinder. The second generation (1986) brought the 750i in 1987, whose 5.0-litre V12 was the first German post-war twelve-cylinder, and the first long-wheelbase 7 Series. In the third generation (1994) the 750i's V12 grew to 5.4 litres, and diesels arrived: the 725tds in 1996, the 730d in 1998 and the 740d in 1999. The fourth generation (2001) added the 6.0-litre V12 760i in 2003. The fifth (2008) offered the twin-turbocharged V12 760i and 760Li and, from 2009, the ActiveHybrid 7. The sixth (2015) was the first 7 Series plug-in hybrid, the 740e, and its M760Li xDrive had a 610 hp V12. The updated seventh generation of 2026 lists the i7 60 xDrive, M760e xDrive, 740 xDrive and 740d xDrive.

## How have the 5 Series badges changed?

The 5 Series started the system: the first generation launched in 1972 as the four-cylinder 520 and 520i, the 525 followed as the first six-cylinder 5 Series, and the M535i arrived in 1980. The second generation brought the 524td turbodiesel and the 525e, a 2.7-litre six-cylinder whose "e" (eta) is a former suffix, not the plug-in hybrid "e" used today. The third generation (1988) launched with the 520i, 525i, 530i, 535i and 524td, and eight-cylinder models, including the 540i, joined in 1992; by the fifth generation (2003) the petrol range ran from the 520i to the 550i. The sixth generation (2009) launched as the 520d, 523i, 525d, 528i, 530d, 535i and 550i, and the seventh (2017) as the 530i, 540i, 520d and 530d, followed by the 530e plug-in hybrid and the M550i xDrive. The eighth generation (2023) added the fully electric i5; in the United States it launched as the 530i, 540i xDrive, i5 eDrive40 and i5 M60 xDrive.

## What are codes such as E39 or F10?

These are BMW development codes. They identify a generation rather than a model: the E39 and E60 generations of the 5 Series Sedan were followed by the F10, and the E38 and E65 generations of the 7 Series by the F01. BMW intends them for internal use, but they are useful for telling generations apart, because the same badge can appear on several of them.

## Are BMW models the same in Oman and the Gulf?

Not necessarily. BMW offers its engines in a market-specific selection: the current 5 Series, for example, launched in South Africa as the 520d and the i5 M60 xDrive only, while other markets got other versions. Otto hasn't been able to confirm the Gulf range from BMW documentation: BMW Group Middle East held the regional debut of the updated 7 Series in Dubai in September 2026, but its announcement names no regional variants, specifications or on-sale dates. In Oman, BMW’s authorised importer is Al Jenaibi International Automobiles, so check the specification of the exact car with the authorised dealer, and have an imported or used car checked in a [pre-purchase inspection](https://autotronix.om/otto/pre-purchase-inspection).

## Common Questions

**Does 30 in a BMW badge always mean 3 litres?**
No. It did on older models, but on today's cars the two digits indicate engine power, not displacement.

**What does xDrive mean?**
All-wheel drive. sDrive, used only on X and Z models, means that only one axle is driven.

**What do CS, CSL, L and ti mean?**
CS stood for Coupé Sport and now stands for Competition Sport, on particularly sporty M models. CSL adds Leichtbau, meaning lightweight construction. L marks a long wheelbase, and ti, for Turismo Internazionale, appeared on the 02 and is used today on the 128ti.

**Is the BMW iX part of a series?**
No. As BMW's electric flagship, the iX carries no series number.
