## Short Answer

DSG is the Volkswagen Group’s name for its dual-clutch gearbox. It works like a manual gearbox that changes gear by itself, using two clutches: one for the odd-numbered gears and one for the even-numbered gears. Because the next gear is prepared in advance, a gear change is simply one clutch letting go as the other takes up the drive, so it is quick and does not interrupt the flow of power. Other makers build dual-clutch gearboxes under their own names.

## What does DSG stand for?

DSG comes from the German Direktschaltgetriebe, meaning direct-shift gearbox. It is the Volkswagen Group’s name for its dual-clutch gearbox, and Audi calls its version S tronic. Other manufacturers, including Hyundai and Kia, use the general term dual-clutch transmission (DCT). Their owner’s manuals describe it well: it can be thought of as a manual gearbox that shifts automatically, and it has no torque converter, the fluid coupling a conventional automatic uses to move off.

## How does a dual-clutch gearbox work?

Inside are two clutches, controlled by electronics and hydraulics. One clutch serves the odd-numbered gears (first, third, fifth and so on) and the other serves the even-numbered gears. While the car drives in one gear, the next one is already prepared on the other side: in second gear, for example, third is ready and waiting. A gear change is then one clutch releasing while the other engages, so the drive is not interrupted. Volkswagen says its DSGs change gear within a few hundredths of a second. In a DSG, the control unit and the hydraulic unit that operate the clutches and select the gears are combined in one assembly, often called the mechatronics unit.

## What is the difference between a wet and a dry clutch?

A wet clutch runs in oil; a dry clutch does not. Both types are used in dual-clutch gearboxes. Volkswagen’s first six-speed DSG used wet clutches, while its seven-speed DQ200, introduced in 2008, uses dry clutches. Current owner’s manuals show the same split elsewhere: a Kia manual describes a dry-type dual clutch, and a Hyundai manual a wet-type one. Volkswagen designs different DSGs for different engines, from up to 250 Nm for the DQ200 to up to 550 Nm for the DQ500.

## What does a DSG feel like to drive?

In normal driving it behaves much like an automatic, and it can also be shifted by the driver with the gear lever and, on many cars, paddles. Gear changes are quick and the drive continues through them. Manufacturers also note that changes can sometimes be felt and heard, and that a light vibration at low speed is normal, because the clutches are engaging much as they would in a manual car. Volkswagen and Hyundai both say their dual-clutch gearboxes are more fuel-efficient than conventional automatics, although how much fuel a car uses still depends on the vehicle and how it is driven.

## How should you treat a dual-clutch gearbox on hills and in traffic?

Because a dual-clutch gearbox moves off with a clutch rather than a torque converter, owner’s manuals ask for a little care, especially in the heat, in slow traffic and on steep roads. Kia’s manual says not to hold the car on a slope with the accelerator, but with the foot brake or parking brake, because otherwise the clutch and transmission may overheat and be damaged. Hyundai’s manual advises pressing the accelerator smoothly and gradually when moving off on an incline. If an overheating warning appears, Kia’s manual tells the driver to pull over to a safe location, stop with the engine running, apply the brakes and select P until a message confirms the transmission has cooled, because the clutch is disabled until then. Messages and procedures differ by model, so your own owner’s manual is the reference.

## When should a DSG be checked?

A transmission warning that keeps returning, as Kia’s manual notes, should be checked by a professional workshop. So should a change in how the gearbox behaves: harsh or delayed changes, shuddering when moving off, or new noises. Because the clutches, the hydraulics and the control unit all affect how it shifts, symptoms can look alike; [a gearbox that jerks or slips](https://autotronix.om/otto/gearbox-jerking-slipping) explains why diagnosis comes first, and [reading the gearbox’s fault codes and live data](https://autotronix.om/otto/diagnostic-scan-explained) is part of it. Fluid questions belong to the manufacturer’s schedule and procedure, covered in [checking transmission fluid](https://autotronix.om/otto/transmission-fluid-check). AutoTronix Garage diagnoses and repairs gearboxes, AutoTronix Lab handles transmission control module (TCM) programming for dual-clutch gearboxes, and AutoTronix Express replaces transmission fluid to the manufacturer’s specification.

## Common Questions

**Is a DSG an automatic or a manual gearbox?**
Both, in a way. Inside it is built like a manual gearbox with clutches, but it changes gear by itself and has no clutch pedal. It can also be shifted by the driver when you want more control.

**Can I hold my dual-clutch car on a hill with the accelerator?**
It is better not to. Kia’s owner’s manual, for example, says to hold the car with the foot brake or parking brake instead, because using the accelerator can overheat the clutch and transmission.

**When did the DSG first appear?**
Volkswagen introduced it in large-scale production in 2003. The Golf R32 was the first Volkswagen offered with it, as an optional 6-speed DSG.

**Is a DSG the same as a CVT?**
No. A DSG has fixed gears and two clutches that hand the drive from one gear to the next. A CVT has no fixed gears at all and changes its ratio continuously.
