Otto Explains — Model Lineups
Ferrari Model Lineup Explained
Short Answer
Ferrari groups its cars into four families: the main line-up of range models, limited supercars such as the F80, special series that sharpen a range model, and Icona cars inspired by historic Ferraris. In October 2026 the line-up ran from the 296 GTB and GTS through the Amalfi, the 849 Testarossa and the 12Cilindri to the Purosangue and the electric Luce. Ferrari’s names are not one system: some numbers describe the engine, letters such as GTB describe the body, and many names honour places, races or history.
How is the Ferrari range organised?
On 24 October 2026 Ferrari’s international range page grouped its cars into four families. Supercars held the F80. The Line-up held the range models: the Luce, the 12Cilindri and 12Cilindri Spider, the Purosangue, the 849 Testarossa and 849 Testarossa Spider, the Amalfi and Amalfi Spider, and the 296 GTB and 296 GTS. Special series held the 12Cilindri Manuale, the SF90 XX Stradale and SF90 XX Spider, and the 296 Speciale and 296 Speciale A. Icona held the Daytona SP3 and the Monza SP1 and SP2. This is a current list, and Ferrari changes it often.
What are the cars in Ferrari’s main line-up?
The 296 GTB combines a V6 with a plug-in hybrid system. The Amalfi, a front-engined V8 2+ coupé, replaced the Ferrari Roma in 2025. The 849 Testarossa, a plug-in hybrid V8 with 1,050 cv, replaced the SF90 Stradale the same year. The 12Cilindri is a two-seater with a naturally aspirated V12 at the front, and the Purosangue is Ferrari’s four-door, four-seat car with a V12. The Luce of 2026 is Ferrari’s first electric car, with four doors and five seats. Otto explains the difference between these power types in hybrid, plug-in hybrid and electric cars explained.
What is a Ferrari supercar?
Since 1984 Ferrari has periodically built a limited-run supercar that shows the most advanced technology of its time: the GTO, F40, F50, Enzo, LaFerrari and, from 2024, the F80. The F80 is limited to 799 cars and uses a hybrid V6 with the same architecture as Ferrari’s Le Mans-winning 499P.
What are Ferrari’s special series and XX cars?
A special series takes a range model’s performance further; Ferrari names the 488 Pista and the 812 Competizione as examples. The XX Programme is different: XX cars are built for the track only, are not homologated for the road, and are driven by selected clients. The SF90 XX Stradale and SF90 XX Spider of 2023, limited to 799 and 599 cars, were the first road-legal XX models. The 12Cilindri Manuale of 2026 is a special series of the 12Cilindri with a gear lever and clutch pedal that work by wire.
What is the Icona series?
Icona cars are limited models that reinterpret famous Ferraris of the past with modern technology. The series began in 2018 with the Monza SP1, a single-seater, and the Monza SP2, a two-seater, inspired by Ferrari’s open barchettas and named after two of them, the 750 Monza and 860 Monza. The second Icona car, the Daytona SP3, is named after Ferrari’s 1-2-3 finish at the 1967 24 Hours of Daytona.
What do the numbers in Ferrari names mean?
It depends on the era. Early Ferraris used the displacement of a single cylinder: the 125 of 1947 had 125 cc per cylinder, and the 365 in 365 GTB4 and the 400 of 1976 work the same way. From the Dino 308 GT4 of 1973, many models combined total displacement and cylinders: the 308 meant 3 litres and 8 cylinders, and the 296 means 2,992 cc and 6 cylinders. Not every current number has an official explanation that Otto could find, so Otto does not guess at names such as 849 or 812.
What do GTB, GTO, BB and other letters mean?
GTB stands for Gran Turismo Berlinetta, as on the 296 GTB. The O in GTO stands for Omologata, homologated for racing, as on the 250 GTO. BB on the 365 GT4 BB means Berlinetta Boxer, for its flat 12-cylinder engine. On the 365 GTB4, the 4 counts the camshafts. On the 308, the GTS was the version with a targa-type removable roof. The M in Portofino M stands for Modificata, modified.
Where do names such as Testarossa, Purosangue and Dino come from?
Testa Rossa, red head, first described the red cam covers of the 500 TR racing car of 1956; it returned on the 1984 Testarossa and the 849 Testarossa. Purosangue is Italian for thoroughbred. Dino was the name of Enzo Ferrari’s son, who died in 1956. Ferrari road cars without a V12 carried the Dino badge rather than the Ferrari name, until the Dino 308 GT4 took the Ferrari badge at the end of 1976.
Are Ferrari models different in Oman and the Gulf?
Otto has not found an official Ferrari source that describes Gulf or Oman specifications. The fuel consumption and emissions figures on Ferrari’s international pages follow European type-approval rules. In Oman, Alfardan Motors in Al Azaiba, Muscat, presents itself on Ferrari’s dealer site as the official Ferrari dealer and says it is recognised as Ferrari’s exclusive importer in Oman; in October 2026 its site listed the same model families as Ferrari’s international range, with no Oman-specific specifications. So check the exact specification of any car with the authorised dealer before you buy. For a used Ferrari, a specialist inspection such as the one Otto describes in what a vehicle health report is helps confirm its condition.
