## Short Answer

The difference is how each one makes light. Halogen bulbs heat a filament and give a yellowish light; they cost the least and are the simplest to replace, but have the shortest life. Xenon (HID) bulbs strike an electric arc in gas and give a whiter, brighter light, while LED headlights light instantly, use the least energy and last longest, but cost the most. Each headlamp is designed around one type of light source, so fitting a different type can dazzle other drivers.

## How do halogen headlights work?

A halogen bulb makes light by passing electricity through a tungsten filament until it glows, much like a household bulb. The light is yellowish. Halogen is the oldest and least expensive of the three technologies, and the bulbs are the simplest to replace. The trade-offs are that they use the most energy and have the shortest life: roughly 500 to 1,000 hours, according to the lighting maker HELLA.

---

## How are xenon (HID) headlights different?

A xenon bulb, also called HID (high-intensity discharge), has no filament. An electronic unit called a ballast ignites an arc between two electrodes inside a gas-filled capsule, using up to about 30,000 volts to start it, then keeps it running at a much lower voltage. The light is whiter and more than twice as strong as halogen, and the bulbs last longer, roughly 2,000 to 3,000 hours according to HELLA. Xenon lights take a few seconds to reach full brightness. Their colour also changes with age, so a new bulb can look more yellow than the old one beside it. Because the system works at such high voltages, never touch or try to repair xenon headlight parts yourself: a xenon headlight fault is a job for a workshop.

## What makes LED headlights different?

LED headlights use light-emitting diodes. They reach full brightness instantly, give a daylight-like light and use the least energy of the three. HELLA puts their life at up to about 20,000 hours. They cost the most to buy, and repairs can be more involved: LEDs are often built into a module, so the whole module may need replacing rather than a single bulb. LEDs are also sensitive to extreme temperatures, which is why LED headlamps are designed to carry heat away.

---

## Why do xenon and LED headlights need to be aimed precisely?

Brighter light dazzles more when it is aimed wrongly. A car's angle changes with load and when it accelerates or brakes, which moves the beam up and down. Headlamp levelling systems correct this, and almost all cars with xenon headlights have automatic levelling that reacts as you drive. In Europe, xenon low beams may only be used together with automatic levelling and a headlamp cleaning system. A badly set xenon headlamp can dazzle oncoming drivers.

---

## Can you fit xenon or LED bulbs in halogen headlights?

It is not a simple upgrade. A headlamp's reflector and lens are designed around its light source. When a xenon bulb is put into a halogen headlamp, the beam pattern is wrong: there is glare in some places and too little light in others. For that reason, the UK does not allow kits that convert halogen headlamps to xenon; a xenon headlight must be a complete unit approved for xenon, with cleaning and self-levelling. The lighting maker OSRAM states that its LED replacement lamps for halogen sockets have no ECE approval and must not be used on public roads, and warns that road use can affect a vehicle's licence and insurance cover. In Oman, the Royal Oman Police does not allow vehicle modifications that don't conform to approved specifications, and such modifications can be fined. Check with the ROP before changing your headlight type.

---

## When should your headlights be checked?

Have them looked at if one headlight looks dimmer or a different colour from the other, if a light works only some of the time, or if oncoming drivers flash you even though you are on low beam, which can mean a beam is aimed too high. Headlights are also worth checking before [a long drive](https://autotronix.om/otto/long-drive-car-check-oman). The AutoTronix Express vehicle inspection includes the exterior lights, headlights among them. A light that works inconsistently can have an electrical cause, which AutoTronix Lab diagnoses.

## Common Questions

**Which type of headlight lasts the longest?**
LED. HELLA gives up to about 20,000 hours for LED headlights, roughly 2,000 to 3,000 hours for xenon and roughly 500 to 1,000 hours for halogen. Real life depends on the bulb and how the car is used.

**Why does one xenon headlight look a different colour from the other?**
Xenon bulbs change colour as they age, so a newly fitted bulb can look more yellow than an older one on the other side. The difference comes from the bulbs' ages and is not by itself a fault.

**Why can't I just swap a bulb in an LED headlight?**
In many LED headlamps the LEDs are part of a sealed module rather than a separate bulb, so a fault can mean replacing the whole module. That is one reason LED repairs can cost more than replacing a halogen bulb.

**Do xenon headlights take time to reach full brightness?**
Yes. A xenon bulb needs a few seconds after switching on to reach full brightness, while LED headlights are at full brightness instantly.
