## Short Answer

JLR now presents Land Rover’s vehicles as three brands: Range Rover (the Range Rover, Range Rover Sport, Velar and Evoque), Defender (the 90, 110 and 130) and Discovery (the Discovery and Discovery Sport), with Land Rover kept as the heritage mark on all of them. Older Range Rovers are identified by generation codes such as P38a, L322 and L405. On current models, P marks a petrol version, D a diesel, a final e a plug-in hybrid and EV an electric one, while SV marks the most exclusive models.

## How is the Land Rover range organised today?

Since June 2023 JLR has organised itself as a House of Brands: Range Rover, Defender, Discovery and Jaguar. Range Rover, Defender and Discovery are the former Land Rover model lines, and JLR keeps Land Rover as a heritage mark that still appears on the vehicles and at retailers. Land Rover’s Oman website shows the result: the Range Rover, Range Rover Sport, Range Rover Velar and Range Rover Evoque; the Discovery and Discovery Sport; and the Defender 90, 110 and 130. In July 2026 JLR previewed a fifth Range Rover, the Range Rover GT.

## What are the Range Rover generations?

There have been five. The original, now called the Classic, went on sale in 1970, gained four doors in 1981 and was built until 1996. The second generation, P38a, arrived in 1994; the third, L322, ran from 2001 to 2012 and was the first with a monocoque body; the fourth, L405, launched in 2012 as the first all-aluminium SUV. The fifth generation was revealed in October 2021 on the MLA-Flex architecture, in standard and long-wheelbase (LWB) form and with seven seats offered for the first time. Otto has not found a generation code for it in the official sources read, so none is given here. In 2026 it was joined by the Range Rover Electric, the first electric Range Rover.

---

## What are the Range Rover Sport generations?

Three so far. The first Range Rover Sport arrived in 2005, the second in 2013, and the third was revealed on 10 May 2022 on MLA-Flex and is built at Solihull. The SVR of 2015 was the first model from Land Rover’s SV team, and today Range Rover’s Oman website lists a Range Rover Sport SV. An electric version, the Range Rover Sport Electric, was revealed on 30 September 2026.

---

## Where does the Range Rover Velar fit?

Between the Evoque and the Range Rover Sport. The Velar was introduced in 2017 as the fourth member of the Range Rover family. Its name is older than the car: Velar, from “velare”, to veil or cover, was the badge on 26 pre-production Range Rover prototypes in 1969, used to hide what they were. Otto has not found an official source describing a second Velar generation.

---

## What are the Range Rover Evoque generations?

Two. The first Evoque was unveiled at the 2010 Paris Motor Show and built from 2011, described by Range Rover as the world’s first luxury compact SUV, with a convertible added in 2015. The second, revealed on 22 November 2018, moved to the Premium Transverse Architecture, added a 48-volt mild hybrid and later a plug-in hybrid, and was the first vehicle with Ground View, a camera image of the ground beneath the front of the car.

## How are Defender models named?

Mostly by body length. The utility Land Rover became the One Ten in 1983, with a 110-inch wheelbase, and the Ninety in 1984; in 1990 the range was renamed Defender 90, 110 and 130. That original Defender ended in 2016. The new Defender of 2019 is a different car on the D7x aluminium monocoque, and today it is offered as the 90, 110 and 130, built at Nitra in Slovakia. On Land Rover’s Oman website the trims include S, X-Dynamic SE, X-Dynamic HSE, X and the OCTA, the high-performance Defender with a 635PS V8.

---

## How is the Discovery range organised?

In two models. The Discovery has had five generations: the original of 1989, the Discovery II of 1998, the Discovery 3 of 2004, the Discovery 4 of 2009 and the fifth generation of 2016. The smaller Discovery Sport arrived in 2014, and Land Rover describes it as the successor of the Freelander 2. JLR calls the Discovery its best-selling product ever, with more than 2 million sold since 1989.

## What do P400, D300, P550e and EV450 mean?

They are powertrain designations. On Land Rover’s and Range Rover’s Oman websites, P marks petrol versions, such as the P380 and P540 Range Rover Sport, D marks diesels, such as the D300, a final e marks plug-in hybrids, such as the P460e and P550e, and EV marks electric versions, such as the EV450 and EV550. In the examples Otto read, the number matches the power in PS: the P440e and P510e Range Rover Sport had 440PS and 510PS, and the Defender OCTA’s P635 V8 has 635PS. Otto has not found an official explanation of the scheme, so read the number as a label and check the specification of the car itself.

---

## What do SE, Autobiography, Vogue and SV mean?

They are trims and special lines rather than separate models. Range Rover Sport trims on the Oman website run S, SE, Dynamic SE, Dynamic HSE and Autobiography. Autobiography began as a Range Rover personalisation service in 1994, and Vogue grew from the In Vogue limited edition of 1981 into a permanent model name. SV stands at the top: the Range Rover SV is handcrafted by Special Vehicle Operations, and the Range Rover Sport SVR of 2015 was the SV team’s first model.

---

## Which Land Rover names have been discontinued?

Several. The Series I, II and III names gave way to the One Ten and Ninety in 1983 and 1984 and to Defender in 1990. The Range Rover Classic ended in 1996, and the original Defender in 2016. The Freelander, launched in 1997, continued as the Freelander 2 from 2006; Land Rover gives the two combined model years of 1997 to 2014, and the Discovery Sport took its place. The Discovery name continues, but the Discovery 1 to 4 have been replaced by the fifth generation.

---

## Are Land Rover models the same in Oman and the Gulf?

Not necessarily. Land Rover’s and Range Rover’s Oman websites list the model lines offered, including the Range Rover Electric and Range Rover Sport Electric, open for pre-order, but they state no Oman or GCC specifications. Both say that specifications, prices and colours may vary from market to market, the Defender page notes that maximum power varies by market, and the Discovery page’s fuel figures come from EU tests. Check the exact specification of a car with the authorised retailer listed on Land Rover’s Oman website, and have an imported or used car checked in a [pre-purchase inspection](https://autotronix.om/otto/pre-purchase-inspection).
