## Short Answer

A Mercedes-Benz name starts with its class. Five core classes, A, B, C, E and S, anchor the range; SUVs add GL and coupés CL in front of the related class letter, as in GLC or CLA. The number after the letters once showed engine size but now mainly separates versions, a small letter marks the powertrain, such as d for diesel or e for electric drive, and 4MATIC means all-wheel drive. Mercedes-AMG and Mercedes-Maybach are sub-brands, and EQ marks electric cars.

---

## How does Mercedes-Benz name its cars?

The system centres on five core model series: the A-, B-, C-, E- and S-Class. Naming a car by its class letter began with the S-Class, officially so named from 1972, and in 1993 Mercedes-Benz extended the idea to every passenger car: the letter now comes first, followed by a number. That is why the 400 E of 1991 became the E 420 under the new system. Since 2015 a model name has been an acronym of one to three capital letters built around those five core classes. The company’s wider story is told in [the history of Mercedes-Benz](https://autotronix.om/otto/mercedes-benz-history).

## Does the number still tell you the engine size?

Not any more. Under the 1993 system the number referred to the engine’s cubic capacity, although there were exceptions even before then: the 190 of 1982 had a 1,997 cc engine but was given the lower number to position it in the range. Today the number mainly separates versions. In the updated C-Class of 2026, for example, the C 200, C 250 and C 300 all use the same two-litre four-cylinder petrol engine (M 254 EVO), tuned to 130 kW (177 hp), 160 kW (218 hp) and 190 kW (258 hp). Electric models carry numbers too, such as the C 400 4MATIC electric, which has no combustion engine at all. To know what is under the bonnet, check the specification of the car itself.

## What do GL, CL and SL mean in a model name?

They show the body type, with a third letter pointing to the related core class. Every SUV starts with GL, a tribute to the G-Class, which Mercedes-Benz calls the forefather of all its SUVs: the GLA relates to the A-Class, the GLC to the C-Class, the GLE to the E-Class and the GLS to the S-Class. Four-door coupés start with CL, as in the CLA and CLS, and since 2016 roadsters have started with SL, which is why the SLK became the SLC. Two names were left unchanged because of their status: the G-Class and the SL.

## What do the small letters and 4MATIC mean?

A lower-case letter after the number shows the powertrain: d for diesel, e for electric drive (including plug-in hybrids), h for hybrid, c for natural gas and f for fuel cell. Petrol models have no letter. The system was introduced in 2015 and replaced longer labels such as CDI and BlueTEC for diesels. 4MATIC is the name Mercedes-Benz has used for all-wheel drive since 1985. The newest fully electric models often add the word “electric” instead, as in the GLA 200 electric. How plug-in hybrids and electric cars differ is explained in [hybrid, plug-in hybrid and electric cars](https://autotronix.om/otto/hybrid-vs-plug-in-hybrid-vs-electric).

## What are codes such as W 202 or C 205?

These are model-series codes, Mercedes-Benz’s way of identifying a generation and body style. The three digits name the model series, and a letter in front marks the body. In the C-Class, for example, the 202 series was the W 202 as a saloon and the S 202 as an estate; the 205 series included the S 205 estate, a long-wheelbase V 205 for China, the C 205 coupé and the A 205 cabriolet. Roadsters have their own prefix, as in the R 129 SL. The same class name runs through many series, so the code is the clearest way to tell one generation from another, for instance the S-Class 116, 126, 140, 220, 221 and 222 series.

## Where do AMG, Maybach and EQ fit in?

Mercedes-AMG is the performance sub-brand. AMG began in 1967 as an independent racing-engine company founded by Hans Werner Aufrecht and Erhard Melcher, signed a cooperation contract with Daimler-Benz in 1990 and has been fully owned since 2005. AMG numbers do not show engine size either: the A 45 S 4MATIC+ has a 2.0-litre four-cylinder, the GLC 53 4MATIC+ a 3.0-litre six-cylinder and the G 63 a 4.0-litre V8. Do not confuse these with AMG Line, an equipment line of styling features on regular models. Mercedes-Maybach, launched in 2014, is a luxury sub-brand, not an equipment line; its models, such as the Mercedes-Maybach S-Class and the Mercedes-Maybach GLS 680, build on the S-Class and GLS. EQ arrived in 2018 with the EQC as the brand for electric cars, and models such as the EQE and EQS carry it in their names.

## Which Mercedes-Benz names have been retired?

Several familiar names have been replaced. The SEC coupés became S-Class Coupés in 1993 and the CL-Class from 1996 to 1998. With the 2015 system the M-Class (or ML) became the GLE, the GLK became the GLC and the GL became the GLS, and the SLK roadster became the SLC from 2016, a name that lasted until 2020. The C-Class sports coupé of the 203 series was sold as the CLC from 2008. When reading an older advertisement or service record, the model-series code is the surest way to match an old name to today’s range.

## Are Mercedes-Benz models the same in Oman?

Otto hasn’t been able to confirm Oman- or Gulf-specific versions from official sources. Mercedes-Benz cars in Oman are distributed by Zawawi Trading Company, which has held the agency since the end of 1972 and is the exclusive distributor of the whole range, with showrooms in Muscat, Sohar and Salalah. On 23 October 2026 its official Mercedes-Benz Oman website listed most of the current families, including electric versions such as the GLC Electric, Mercedes-AMG GT models and Mercedes-Maybach models, but it said nothing about Gulf-specific equipment, and the engines and badges offered for each model could not be read there. Engines are often offered in a market-specific selection, so check the specification of the exact car with the authorised dealer, and have an imported or used car checked in a [pre-purchase inspection](https://autotronix.om/otto/pre-purchase-inspection).

## Common Questions

**Why do the C 200, C 250 and C 300 share one engine?**
Because the badge now separates output levels, not engine sizes. In the 2026 C-Class all three use the same two-litre four-cylinder, with 130 kW, 160 kW and 190 kW respectively.

**Is a car with AMG Line a Mercedes-AMG?**
No. AMG Line is an equipment line of design features on regular Mercedes-Benz models. Mercedes-AMG models, such as the A 45 S 4MATIC+ or the G 63, come from the performance sub-brand and have their own engines.

**What happened to the ML and the GLK?**
They were renamed under the 2015 system: the M-Class, or ML, became the GLE, and the GLK became the GLC.

**Does every 4MATIC split power the same way?**
No. 4MATIC is a family name for all-wheel drive rather than one fixed system. A C-Class All-Terrain sends at most 45 percent forward and 55 percent rearward, whereas AMG’s 4MATIC+ can run anywhere between rear drive only and an even 50:50 split.
