## Short Answer

Six cars changed Porsche more than any others. The 356 turned a design office into a car maker under its own name, the 911 has been its core product since 1964, and the 917 brought its first overall Le Mans win in 1970. The Boxster led the company out of a deep crisis, the Cayenne took it into a new segment in 2002, and the Taycan made it a maker of fully electric cars in 2019.

## How did the 356 turn Porsche into a car maker?

Porsche began in 1931 as a design and consultancy office that developed engines and vehicles for other companies. The 356 changed that. On 8 June 1948 the 356 ‘No. 1’ Roadster, a mid-engined two-seater, became the first car bearing the Porsche name to receive its general operating permit. In 1950 the company returned to Stuttgart-Zuffenhausen and began series production of the 356, and from then on Porsche was a sports car manufacturer with its own products.

## Why did the 911 become the heart of the brand?

Porsche presented the 356’s successor at the Frankfurt motor show on 12 September 1963 as the 901, and renamed it 911 in 1964 after an objection from Peugeot. It kept the rear-mounted, air-cooled engine layout, now with a six-cylinder boxer, and added two small rear seats and a large luggage compartment, so it was usable every day as well as fast. Porsche intended the 928 of 1977 to replace it; instead the 928 ended in 1995, while the 911 is now in its eighth generation. In 2025 Porsche delivered 51,583 cars from the 911 line, a record for the model.

## What did the 917 change in motorsport?

For most of its first two decades at Le Mans, from 1951, Porsche raced mainly in the smaller-displacement classes. It then changed strategy, missed victory in 1969 by about 75 metres, and on 14 June 1970 Hans Herrmann and Richard Attwood gave it its first overall win in a 917 KH. A 917 KH won again in 1971. Porsche says that victory made it a serious competitor in endurance racing; by 2023 it had 19 overall Le Mans wins, more than any other manufacturer.

## How did the Boxster rescue Porsche?

By the 1991/92 financial year Porsche was in one of the worst economic crises in its history: it was losing money and delivered only 23,060 cars that year. The Boxster, shown as a concept in Detroit in January 1993 and built from 1996, was the answer. It was a mid-engined roadster developed alongside a new 911 generation and shared many of its components and its six-cylinder boxer engine, which brought costs down. Porsche credits it with lifting the company out of falling sales and back to profitable production. It was also the first Porsche with a name rather than just a number.

## Why was the Cayenne a turning point?

With its two existing model lines not enough to secure the company’s future, Porsche planned a ‘third Porsche’. On the advice of its sales organisation in the United States it chose an off-road vehicle over a people-carrier and developed it with Volkswagen, whose Touareg shared the platform; testing included dune runs in Dubai. The Cayenne premiered in Paris in September 2002 and was built in Porsche’s new Leipzig plant. Porsche had expected 25,000 sales a year, but 276,652 first-generation cars found buyers, and the Cayenne opened many new markets for the brand. It also took Porsche into hybrids: the Cayenne S Hybrid of 2010 was the first series-production hybrid in the company’s history.

## How did the Taycan change Porsche?

The Taycan, unveiled on 4 September 2019 on three continents at once and built in Zuffenhausen, was Porsche’s first fully electric sports car and the first production vehicle with an 800-volt system voltage. It showed that an electric car could carry the Porsche name, and other model lines followed: the second-generation Macan is all-electric, and a fully electric Cayenne premiered in 2025. In 2025, 22.2 per cent of the cars Porsche delivered were fully electric. ## Why aren’t cars like the 959 or the Carrera GT on this list?

This list includes a car only for what it changed in the company: its products, its finances, its racing record or its markets. Famous technology showcases such as the 959, the Carrera GT and the 918 Spyder are remembered for what they achieved as cars, and they appear in Otto’s selection of ten iconic Porsche models. The engineering behind them, from turbocharging to the PDK gearbox, belongs to the Porsche engines and drivetrains article.

## Common Questions

**When did Porsche launch its first plug-in hybrid?**
In 2014. Four years after its first hybrid SUV, Porsche added the ability to charge from the grid: the result was called the Cayenne S E-Hybrid.

**Which car gave Porsche its first overall Le Mans victory?**
The 917 KH, driven by Hans Herrmann and Richard Attwood on 14 June 1970.

**Did Volkswagen help develop the Cayenne?**
Yes. It was a joint project, code-named ‘Colorado’ and announced in June 1998, in which the Cayenne and the Volkswagen Touareg shared a platform.

**Where does the name Boxster come from?**
It combines ‘boxer’, for the engine, and ‘roadster’. It was the first Porsche with a name rather than just a number.
