## Short Answer

Nine cars changed Rolls-Royce as a company. The 10 H.P. of 1904 created the partnership, the Silver Ghost built the reputation, the 20 H.P. opened the brand to owner-drivers, the Silver Dawn and Silver Shadow turned it into a maker of complete cars, the Phantom VII restarted it under BMW, the Ghost and the Cullinan widened the range, and the Spectre made it electric.

---

## How did Otto choose these cars?

Fame alone was not enough. Each car here changed something lasting about the company: how it was formed, its reputation, who it built cars for, how it built them, who owned it, or what kind of cars it made. Famous cars that did not change the company, such as the Phantom III or the coachbuilt Boat Tail, are in Otto’s ten iconic Rolls-Royce cars instead.

---

## How did the 10 H.P. create Rolls-Royce?

It was the product that brought the two founders together. Henry Royce’s own 10 H.P., with a twin-cylinder engine he designed and built, first ran on 1 April 1904. After meeting Royce, Charles Rolls agreed to sell every car Royce could make under a shared name, and the Rolls-Royce 10 H.P. of 1904 became the first car built and sold as a Rolls-Royce. What changed: an engineer’s car became a brand.

---

## How did the Silver Ghost make the reputation?

Through public proof of reliability. The 40/50 H.P., launched in 1906 with a six-cylinder engine of 7,036 cc, became known as the Silver Ghost after one car Claude Johnson named. In 1907 that car completed the Scottish Reliability Trial and then set a world record for continuous travel, and in the 1913 Alpine Trial Silver Ghosts took the first four places. Rolls-Royce says it was the first model to be called the best car in the world. It was built from 1907 to 1925, in Britain and at Springfield in the United States: almost 8,000 cars.

---

## How did the 20 H.P. open Rolls-Royce to owner-drivers?

By being smaller. Launched on 6 October 1922 with a 3.1-litre straight-six, the Twenty was the first Rolls-Royce designed to be driven by its owner rather than a chauffeur, and at least 2,940 were built until 1929. It began a line of smaller cars, the 20/25 H.P., the 25/30 H.P. and the Wraith of 1938, and Rolls-Royce says its straight-six set the pattern for its engines up to the Silver Cloud. What changed: Rolls-Royce now had a second kind of customer.

---

## How did the Silver Dawn change the way Rolls-Royce built cars?

It was the first complete Rolls-Royce. Before it, buyers commissioned bodies from coachbuilders; the Silver Dawn of 1949 came with coachwork assembled in-house. It belonged to the post-war Rationalised Range, begun by the Silver Wraith in 1946, which shared parts across models. It was built first for export and reached British buyers in 1952, when an automatic gearbox could also be specified. What changed: Rolls-Royce became the maker of the whole car.

---

## Why was the Silver Shadow a turning point?

It ended the separate chassis for the mainstream range. The Silver Shadow of 1965 had monocoque construction, four-wheel disc brakes and self-levelling rear suspension, and it was the first Rolls-Royce sold only as a complete car. About 37,000 Silver Shadows and Corniches were made, and its SY platform carried on under the Silver Spirit from 1980 to 1997. What changed: Rolls-Royce’s main range moved to unitary-body construction.

---

## How did the Phantom VII restart Rolls-Royce under BMW?

It was the first car of the BMW era and the first built at Goodwood. After the BMW Group acquired the brand and naming rights in 1998, it needed a new car and a new factory together, and the first Phantom VII was handed over in the opening minutes of 2003. It had an aluminium spaceframe of about 200 extruded sections and a new 6.75-litre V12, and it was built until 2017. What changed: Rolls-Royce became a new company with a new home.

---

## How did the Ghost widen the range?

It gave Rolls-Royce a second model family. Previewed by the 200EX experimental car and introduced in 2009, the Ghost was a second saloon alongside the Phantom, and Rolls-Royce describes it as its most commercially successful model. A new Ghost followed in 2020. What changed: Rolls-Royce was no longer a one-model company.

---

## Why was the Cullinan a turning point?

It took Rolls-Royce into a new kind of car. Launched in 2018, the Cullinan was described by Rolls-Royce as the world’s first super-luxury SUV, built on a version of its aluminium architecture reconfigured to be higher and shorter. In 2023 Rolls-Royce called it its most in-demand model. What changed: the brand’s market reached beyond saloons and coupés.

---

## How did the Spectre make Rolls-Royce electric?

It turned years of experiments into a production car. The one-off electric Phantom 102EX of 2011 provided data that Rolls-Royce says was instrumental in Spectre’s development. Unveiled on 18 October 2022, Spectre is Rolls-Royce’s first fully electric car, with its battery under the floor; it was validated over 2.5 million kilometres of testing, and a 15-year, unlimited-mileage battery warranty is standard. Otto explains [how fully electric cars differ from hybrids](https://autotronix.om/otto/hybrid-vs-plug-in-hybrid-vs-electric). What changed: Rolls-Royce’s drivetrain was no longer only a combustion engine.

## Common Questions

**Did Henry Royce design his first car himself?**
Yes. The Royce 10 H.P. of 1904 used a twin-cylinder engine that Royce designed and built himself.

**Were Silver Ghosts built outside Britain?**
Yes. Of almost 8,000 Silver Ghosts, 1,703 were built at Rolls-Royce’s factory in Springfield, Massachusetts, in the United States.

**Was the Spectre the first electric Rolls-Royce?**
It is the first fully electric production Rolls-Royce. In 2011 Rolls-Royce built a one-off electric Phantom, the 102EX, as an experimental car.

**Is the Cullinan the first Rolls-Royce SUV?**
Yes. Rolls-Royce launched it in 2018 and described it as the world’s first super-luxury SUV.
