## Short Answer

Use the pressure your vehicle manufacturer recommends, shown on the sticker in the driver's door or door pillar, inside the fuel filler flap or in the owner's manual, not the figure printed on the tyre. There is no single pressure for Oman: the heat doesn't change the target, but it makes regular checks more important. Check the tyres cold, never let air out of hot tyres, use the loaded pressure when the car is full, and act on the tyre pressure warning.

---

## Where do you find the right pressure for your car?

The vehicle manufacturer sets the pressure for your car and its tyre size together. You'll usually find it on a sticker on the driver's door or door pillar, inside the fuel filler flap, or in the owner's manual. The front and rear figures may be different. The pressure moulded into the tyre's sidewall is the most the tyre can hold, not the figure to inflate it to. Running the wrong pressure reduces grip and lengthens braking distances, wears the tread unevenly (on the shoulders when too low, in the centre when too high), shortens tyre life and raises fuel consumption, one of the causes covered in [why a car uses more fuel](https://autotronix.om/otto/high-fuel-consumption).

## Does Oman's heat change the pressure you should use?

No. The recommended figures are cold pressures, so check the tyres before you set off, when they haven't been driven on. As tyres warm up, their pressure rises. That rise is expected, so don't let air out of warm tyres to bring them down, or they will be underinflated once they cool. The real danger in the heat is a tyre that is too soft: an underinflated tyre can overheat, the risk is much higher on hot days and on long, fast journeys, and it can end in a tyre failure.

## What changes for a fully loaded car or a long trip?

Many cars list a second, higher pressure for when the car is heavily loaded, for example with the family and luggage on holiday; use it when it applies, and never load the car beyond its limit. Tyres lose air gradually, around 0.07 bar a month according to Michelin, and they can be noticeably low before any warning comes on. So check them with a gauge at least once a month and before every long trip, including the spare. Pressure is one of [the checks Otto recommends before a long drive](https://autotronix.om/otto/long-drive-car-check-oman).

## What should you do if the tyre pressure warning comes on?

It depends on what the warning shows, and your owner's manual explains your car's own system. A warning that stays on steadily means the system has detected low pressure in one or more tyres: drive gently, and at the first safe opportunity check all the pressures with a gauge and inflate them to the recommended figure, with the tyres cold. A warning that flashes for a minute or so and then stays on usually means a fault in the monitoring system itself, such as a sensor: inflating the tyres won't clear it, so check the pressures with a gauge and have the system diagnosed.

---

## When should you stop straight away?

Pull over as soon as it is safe if the car starts to pull, vibrate or handle differently, if a tyre looks flat, or if you hear a thumping noise or smell burning rubber: these can mean rapid air loss or a damaged tyre. Don't carry on at speed on a tyre that may be underinflated, because it can overheat and fail. A tyre that has gone flat or keeps losing air needs a tyre specialist; AutoTronix offers no tyre services.

## Common Questions

**Should I inflate my tyres to the pressure printed on the tyre?**
No. The sidewall figure is the maximum the tyre can hold. Use the pressure on your car's sticker or in the owner's manual.

**Is it normal for tyre pressure to read higher after driving?**
Yes. Pressure rises as tyres warm up, which is why the recommended figures are cold pressures. Don't let air out of warm tyres: wait until they are cold and check again.

**Do I need to check the spare tyre's pressure?**
Yes. Check the spare whenever you check the other tyres, so it is ready if you need it.

**What pressure should I use for driving on sand?**
Otto doesn't give off-road pressures: the right figure depends on the vehicle, the tyres and the load, so follow your vehicle manufacturer's guidance. Never drive at road speeds on tyres below the recommended pressure, because an underinflated tyre can overheat.
