## Short Answer

Volkswagen names most models with words, several of them winds, such as Passat, Scirocco and Golf, and identifies each generation with a Roman numeral and a factory code, such as A1 for the first Golf and B1 for the first Passat. Badges describe the version: GTI marks the sporty models, with GTD for diesels and GTE for plug-in hybrids, R marks the most powerful cars from Volkswagen R, TSI and TDI name petrol and diesel engines, and 4MOTION means all-wheel drive. Electric models form the ID. family. The range sold in Oman differs from Europe’s, so check a car’s specification with the authorised dealer.

## Which model lines make up the Volkswagen range?

Volkswagen’s range is built around a few long-running names. In 2024 Volkswagen named the Passat, the Tiguan and the Polo as its three best-selling models internationally, and the Tiguan, built since 2007, is now the best-selling model of the brand and of the whole Volkswagen Group. Around them sit the Golf and SUVs of different sizes, up to the large seven-seater sold as the Teramont in the Middle East and as the Atlas in North America. Volkswagen’s electric cars form a separate ID. family, from the ID.3 to the ID.7 and the ID. Buzz.

## What do the Golf and Passat generation codes mean?

Volkswagen counts Golf generations with Roman numerals, from the Golf I of 1974 to the Golf VIII, which premiered on 24 October 2019, and gives each one a factory code: Type 17, also called A1, for the first Golf, 19E (A2) for the Golf II, 1H (A3) for the Golf III, 1J (A4) for the Golf IV, 1K for both the Golf V and the Golf VI, and AU for the Golf VII. The Passat generations are known by B codes, from the B1 of 1973–1980 to the B7 of 2010–2014; the eighth Passat followed in 2014 and the ninth in 2023. Knowing your car’s generation helps when you compare parts or specifications, because the same model name covers very different cars.

## Why are so many Volkswagens named after winds?

The Passat of 1973 was the first Volkswagen with a name of its own rather than a type number, and it was named after the trade wind. Others followed the theme: the Scirocco is named after a hot Sahara wind and the Vento after the Italian word for wind, while the Golf is named after the Gulf Stream as well as the game. Not every name is a wind: the Corrado comes from the Spanish “correr”, to run, and the Touareg from the Tuareg people of the Sahara.

## What do GTI, GTD and GTE mean on a Volkswagen?

They mark the sporty versions of a model. GTI first appeared on the Golf in 1976, with a 1.6-litre fuel-injected engine of 110 PS. GTD followed in 1982 on a 1.6-litre turbodiesel Golf with 70 PS, and GTE in 2014 on the first plug-in hybrid Golf. The GTI name now also appears on electric cars: the ID. Polo GTI is the first all-electric GTI, followed by the ID.3 GTI.

## What is Volkswagen R, and what does R-Line mean?

Volkswagen says the R is derived from “Volkswagen Racing”. It began with the Golf IV R32 of 2002, which had a 3.2-litre VR6 engine and 4MOTION all-wheel drive. Volkswagen Individual GmbH, founded in 2003, became Volkswagen R GmbH in 2010, and since 2020 Volkswagen R has been an independent business unit responsible for R models such as the Golf R, which replaced the R32 name with the Golf VI R of 2009. R-Line is different: it is an equipment package with a sporty look, and Volkswagen says it remains the responsibility of each model line rather than of Volkswagen R. Earlier R models included the Passat R36 and the Scirocco R.

## What do TSI, TDI, eTSI and eHybrid mean?

They name the drive. TSI stands for turbocharged stratified injection, Volkswagen’s term for petrol engines that combine turbocharging with direct injection; it first appeared in the Golf V GTI of 2004. TDI is Volkswagen’s name for its direct-injection turbodiesels, first in the Golf III in 1993, and FSI was the name of its earlier direct-injection petrol engines from 2002. On current models eTSI marks a 48-volt mild hybrid and eHybrid a plug-in hybrid; Otto explains the difference between these drives in [hybrid, plug-in hybrid and electric cars](https://autotronix.om/otto/hybrid-vs-plug-in-hybrid-vs-electric).

---

## What does 4MOTION mean?

4MOTION is Volkswagen’s name for all-wheel drive. Until 1998 it was called syncro, after the Transporter syncro of 1985 and the Golf syncro of 1986. The Golf IV brought the 4MOTION name together with a new system built around a Haldex multi-plate clutch. How the system shares power between the axles is covered in Otto’s article on Volkswagen engines and drivetrains.

## How are Volkswagen’s electric models named?

Volkswagen’s electric cars began as a numbered family under the ID. name. The first was the ID.3, built from November 2019 on Volkswagen’s MEB electric platform, and the ID.4, ID.5, ID.7 and ID. Buzz followed. Newer electric models take established names instead: the ID. Polo from 2026, and the ID. Tiguan, which succeeds the ID.4 and ID.5 from 2027.

---

## What do Trendline, Comfortline and Highline mean?

They are equipment levels, and Volkswagen’s trim names have changed over time. The first Golf was sold as C, CL and GL; Trendline and Comfortline replaced CL and GL in 1997, and the Golf VI was offered as Trendline, Comfortline and Highline. Volkswagen Middle East still uses Trendline, Comfortline and Highline for the Passat it relaunched in 2025, while R-Line adds a sporty look on many models.

---

## Which Volkswagen names are no longer used?

Several famous names have ended. The original Beetle was built until 2003, the New Beetle from 1997 to 2010 and the later Beetle from 2011 to 2019. Other discontinued names include the Karmann Ghia (1955–1974), the Scirocco (three generations, the last from 2008 to 2017), the Corrado (1988–1995), the Vento (1992–1998), the Bora and the Lupo (both 1998–2005), the Phaeton (2002–2016), the Eos (2006–2015) and the XL1 (2014–2016).

## Are Volkswagen models the same in Oman and the Gulf?

Not always. Volkswagen notes that the technical data in its German press material apply to Germany and may differ elsewhere, and the Middle East range shows how. The Teramont, launched in the region in 2018 as its first Volkswagen seven-seater, is the large SUV sold in North America as the Atlas. In Europe the Passat has been sold only as an estate since 2022, while Volkswagen Middle East relaunched it in November 2025 as a 4.99-metre saloon with 1.5 or 2.0 TSI engines and a 7-speed DSG. Volkswagen Middle East also lists the Tiguan and T-Roc with a 1.4-litre TSI, a size Volkswagen replaced with 1.5 litres in its European TSI engines in 2016/17. In Oman, Volkswagen’s official website names Premium Motors as the official dealership and lists the Golf GTI, Golf R, Jetta, Passat, T-Roc, Tiguan, Teramont, Touareg, Amarok and Caddy Cargo. Specifications and equipment can change, so check the exact car with the authorised dealer.

## What should I know about electric Volkswagens in Oman?

Volkswagen Oman’s official website states that Volkswagen electric cars have not been released to Oman. It warns that electric Volkswagens brought in through unofficial channels have no international warranty, cannot be serviced by Premium Motors or any Volkswagen-approved facility in Oman, run [software](https://autotronix.om/otto/car-software-updates) intended for another market and were built for overseas market conditions. Before buying one, confirm its status with the authorised dealer, and for any used or imported car a [pre-purchase inspection](https://autotronix.om/otto/pre-purchase-inspection) shows what you are buying.

## Common Questions

**What is the difference between the Golf GTI and the Golf R?**
The R sits above the GTI. It comes from Volkswagen R and has 4MOTION all-wheel drive: the first Golf R of 2009 combined it with a 2.0 TSI of 270 PS. The current Golf GTI uses the EA888 2.0 TSI with 195 kW (265 PS).

**Does every Volkswagen TSI have a turbocharger?**
Yes. By Volkswagen’s own definition, TSI combines turbocharging with direct injection. The twincharger version of 2006 added a supercharger that worked at low engine speeds.

**What does Variant mean on a Volkswagen?**
It is Volkswagen’s name for an estate. In Europe the Passat has been offered only as a Variant since 2022, including the ninth generation of 2023.
