Otto Explains — Model Lineups
Porsche Model Lineup Explained
Short Answer
Porsche builds a small number of model lines: the 911 sports car, the Taycan, Panamera, Macan and Cayenne, and until 2025 the 718 Boxster and Cayman. A name then adds the version: Carrera is the core 911, S and GTS are progressively sportier, a 4 has meant all-wheel drive, Turbo marks the top performance models even when they are electric, and GT cars are the track-focused 911s. Three-digit codes such as 964, 993 or 992 identify the 911’s generations.
Which model lines make up the Porsche range?
In its report on 2025 Porsche listed six model lines: the Macan, Cayenne, 911, Panamera, Taycan, and the 718 Boxster and 718 Cayman. Production of the 718 Boxster and Cayman ended in October 2025. The second-generation Macan is fully electric, although Porsche says the combustion-engined Macan is still offered in most markets outside the EU. The Cayenne is now offered with combustion, plug-in hybrid and, since the fully electric version premiered in November 2025, electric drive. These are current facts from Porsche’s report on 2025, and ranges change.
What do the 911 generation codes mean?
Porsche gives every 911 generation an internal designation, which helps tell cars apart because the name 911 never changes. The original 911 (1963–1973) was followed by the G-Series (1973–1989), the 964 (1989–1994), the 993 (1994–1998), the 996 (1998–2005), the 997 (2004–2012), the 991 (2011–2019) and the current 992 (from 2019). Some milestones help place a car: the 964 brought the first all-wheel-drive 911, the 993 was the last with an air-cooled engine, the 996 was the first water-cooled 911, the 997 returned to round headlights, the 991 moved the Carrera to turbocharged engines with its 2015 update, and in 2024 the 992 gained the first hybrid 911, the Carrera GTS with T-Hybrid.
Why is it called the 911 and not the 901?
Porsche presented the car in 1963 as the 901, the 356’s successor, but renamed it 911 in 1964, before series production began, after Peugeot objected. The 911 name has stayed on every generation since, which is why the generation codes are so useful.
What does Carrera mean on a Porsche?
The name comes from the Carrera Panamericana road race in Mexico. Porsche says Hans Herrmann’s class win and third place overall there in a 550 Spyder in 1954, together with earlier successes in 1952 and 1953, helped create the name. It has since appeared on racing and top models such as the 904 Carrera GTS and the 911 Carrera RS 2.7, and on the Carrera GT super sports car. Today the core 911 models are called Carrera: in 2024 the 911 Carrera, with a 3.0-litre twin-turbo engine, sat below the 911 Carrera GTS.
What do S, 4, GTS and Targa mean?
They show where a car sits within a model line. Porsche’s 718 model-line manager describes the base model as the entry point, with buyers moving up to the higher-specification S and then the GTS. GTS stands for Gran Turismo Sport; first used on the 904 racing car, it now marks the sportiest version of a regular model, and the 911 GTS of the 997 generation was created to sit between the 911 Carrera S and the 911 GT3. A 4 in the name has marked all-wheel drive, from the 911 Carrera 4 of 1989 to the Panamera 4 and the electric Macan 4. Targa is a body style with a wide roll-over bar, first offered on the 911 in 1967; in the 2024 range the Targa was offered only with all-wheel drive.
What does Turbo mean on a Porsche?
It began as a technical description: the 911 Turbo of 1974, internally the 930, was the first Porsche with an exhaust turbocharger. Today Turbo is a rank rather than a technology. Porsche calls its Turbo models the performance flagships of each line, and uses the name on plug-in hybrids such as the Panamera Turbo E-Hybrid and on fully electric cars such as the Taycan Turbo and Macan Turbo, which have no turbocharger at all. In 2023 the 911 range ran from 385 PS in the 911 Carrera to 650 PS in the 911 Turbo S. Meanwhile ordinary 911 Carrera models have used turbocharged engines since 2015, so a turbocharger alone does not make a car a Turbo.
What are Porsche’s GT models?
GT models are the most track-focused 911s, developed by Porsche’s GT vehicles department with technology from racing. The lightweight, Turbo-based 911 GT2 first joined the range in the 993 generation. The 911 GT3, first shown in March 1999, follows in the footsteps of the Carrera RS models and has been renewed several times since, most recently as the 992-based GT3 of 2021 with a 4.0-litre naturally aspirated engine.
What do E-Hybrid and T-Hybrid mean?
E-Hybrid marks Porsche’s plug-in hybrids. The first was the Cayenne S E-Hybrid of 2014, and the third-generation Panamera of 2024 offers four E-Hybrid powertrains. T-Hybrid is the different system introduced on the 911 Carrera GTS in 2024: a lightweight performance hybrid with an electric turbocharger, an electric motor in the gearbox and a small 1.9 kWh battery. Otto explains the wider difference in hybrid, plug-in hybrid and electric cars explained.
What are codes such as 986, 982 or E3?
Like the 911, Porsche’s other lines have internal codes. The first Boxster of 1996 is the 986, and a later generation is the 982. The Cayenne generations are E1 (from 2002), E2 and E3 (from 2017). Some special models have type numbers too: the Carrera GT was internally the Type 980, and the first 911 Turbo the 930. These codes help when checking parts or history for a specific car.
Are Porsche models the same in Oman and the Gulf?
Not necessarily, and Otto has not been able to confirm the differences from Porsche documentation. Porsche states that the vehicle data in its newsroom refer to the German market, and its own range differs by region: the combustion-engined Macan, for example, is still offered in most markets outside the EU. In Oman, Porsche Centre Oman, run by SATA L.L.C., is Porsche’s authorised importer; in 2024 it launched the third-generation Panamera, the all-electric Macan and the updated Taycan, but its releases repeat Porsche’s global data and name no Oman-specific versions. So check the specification of the exact car with the official importer, and for a used or imported car, a pre-purchase inspection confirms what you are buying.
